Where to eat in Bologna

Mercato di Mezzo
Via Drapperie, 40124 Bologna
Is the perfect spot for an aperitivo or a spot of light lunch. But even if you’re not hungry spend some time wondering around the inside of this temple to food, and then wander through the streets that surround it (Via Drapperie is particularly good) to see the little shops dedicated to the very best of the fresh food that Bologna has to offer: from fresh fish still wriggling on ice, to tortellini, the local specialty lovingly hand crafted each morning before going on sale in specialist shops alongside huge rotund Parmesan cheeses and legs of prociutto, the likes of which you won’t find better in all of Italy.

Eataly
Via degli Orefici, 19, 40124 Bologna +39 051 095 2820
Is now popping up all over Italy, but never fails to surpise and delight. Even if you’re not hungry, it’s always an experience to see the delicious food on display, and reads the literature on offer. Head to the check out and ask for your own free copy of the seasonal food chart – every kitchen should have one!

Zanarini
Piazza Galvani, 1, 40124 Bologna +39 051 275 0041
serves up some of the best coffee in Bologna, and is perfectly positioned to pep you up between the many churches nearby.

Caffe Terzi
Via Guglielmo Oberdan, 10/d, 40126 Bologna +39 051 034 4819
Is a great place to call in for breakfast. They prepare a delicious coffee with special spices and flaked cacao on top. And have a great selection of pastries to boot!

Da Nello
Via Monte Grappa, 2, 40100 Bologna +39 051 236331
Words can’t describe the culinary delights that wait in store for you at this Bologna gem. It’s a local favourite, and you’re likely to be plonked next to a politician or another type of important national figure. What you’re unlikely to find are other tourists. If it’s your first time follow the suggestions of the chef, but be sure to try tortellini in brodo, and if they’re in season, give the fiore di zucca a go on my behalf. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Drogheria della Rosa
Via Cartoleria, 10, 40124 Bologna +39 051 222529
Also comes highly recommended for traditional local dishes served in a characteristic old pharmacy.

Buon appetito!
