Fjords in a weekend on the cheap - day 1 cracked

It's fair to say I've got a thing for glacial valleys. From early school years spent kayaking and Duke of Edinburgh award-ing in the Lake District, to a month exploring the sounds of New Zealand, there is something about this majestic landscape that captures the imagination and makes me never want to set foot in an office again.

I've captured our weekend across three posts so you can replicate in a manageable timeline.

Day 1 we headed from the airport via the hotel to dump the bags quickly (Scandinavian super efficiency meant from touch down to check in at the Radisson Blu was a mere 35 minutes) and walked directly to the characteristic port to check out the super yachts. From there we meandered around the beautiful clapperboard Old Town, which is peppered with museums for you to visit, including the acclaimed The Norwegian Canning Museum (really!) which we didn't get chance to see.

We then hopped on a Rødne Fjord Cruise for a first glimpse of the spectacular Lysefjord, which is largely unaccessible by road. Bring a waterproof and a camera - the views and wildlife (seals, goats, jellyfish, and porpoises if you're lucky) mean you'll want to get snap happy, and waterfalls, if not rain are likely but you'll miss the best views if you're in the cabin sheltering the whole journey.

In the evening it started chucking it down, so we set up shop in the snug NB Sørensen (see where to eat) to get warm, dry and map out the next day's road trip.
